Explanation of IMAP, Webmail, and POP3 Email Access
IMAP and Webmail
IMAP, or Internet Message Access Protocol, is the preferred way to set up your email account in an email program. IMAP keeps your email on the mail server; therefore, your messages are available to you no matter where you go. Also, since your mailbox contents are kept off site, your information remains safe should something happen to your computer. IMAP works in conjunction with TOAST.net Webmail, so your email program and Web Mail will always show the same messages and folders. You can setup IMAP access in your email program by following the Email Setup Wizard.
POP3
POP3 or the Post Office Protocol is the older of the two email protocols. It downloads your mail from the mail server and places it directly on your computer's hard drive. While your TOAST.net mail account will operate with POP3, it is not recommended due to the fact that your messages will only be accessible from a single computer, and if anything happens to that computer, all of your messages may be lost. Please use IMAP whenever possible.
